As part of International Boost Self-Esteem Month, we should encourage one another to incorporate methods to boost overall self-esteem. What are some methods that you apply to boost overall self-esteem? There is a transformative exercise that promotes a positive wellbeing and boosts self-esteem, and it’s known as positive affirmations.
What are positive affirmations? Positive affirmations can be thoughts or statements which help create an improved lifestyle. Positive affirmations serve as inspirational reminders, and often incorporate themes of gratitude, mindfulness, and wellbeing. Positive affirmations are essential to improve mental and emotional health, and can be carried out by journaling, arts and crafts, internal dialogue, meditation, etc. It’s about recognizing and acknowledging self-worth and empowerment, understanding that you are enough, and banishing worry, fear, and self-doubt. If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, fear of not being enough, perfectionism, or if you’re extremely hard on yourself – please try this exercise:
Write down 5 things that you like about yourself that are non-physical attributes. For example, one of the things that I wrote for myself is “Empathy and the ability to feel for and understand others.” It may seem challenging, but I strongly encourage you to list 5 qualities of yourself that you feel good about.
After you have completed this exercise, the next exercise would be to write at least 5 things that you are grateful for – this is often known as gratitude journaling, but experts can attest that this activity is imperative to start your day feeling refreshed and at ease. You can take this exercise to the next level by applying your inner dialogue to experiences that you’re facing. For example, if you are overcoming a traumatic experience or battling an illness, a positive affirmation you can say to yourself would be, “I am strong,” and/or “I am brave.”
Good news! These activities can serve as positive affirmations for you to use daily as words of encouragement to boost self-esteem. Sometimes when things get tough, or if we’re feeling extremely hard on ourselves, we can use words of encouragement to boost motivation to surpass obstacles that we face. Make it a goal to practice incorporating positive affirmations into your life – you can write down positive affirmations on Post-it notes and place them around your home as friendly reminders, you can practice gratitude journaling, you can give yourself a pep-talk before a stressful meeting or encounter, or you can incorporate internal dialog during meditation. There are so many options to integrate positive affirmations to fit your lifestyle. Give it a try, and discover the transformative experience to boost self-esteem and overall wellbeing.
